Summary
In this position, you will take on a critical role in the mechanical design of HVAC products. Under general supervision, performs duties utilizing knowledge and skills commensurate with the requirements of this position. In this hands on position, you will work in a team environment with engineers, designers, technicians and product managers to ensure successful product launch and support. Provides engineering responsibility for assigned projects from concept to customer, subject to supervisory review with latitude for independent action to resolve most problems with marketing, manufacturing, and vendors. This position is based in Grand Rapids, MI, and reports to the Director of Engineering.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Participates in the development and/or improvement of new and existing products for design change, cost reductions, warranty improvements, and manufacturability.
Works with general direction to create and develop product concepts, and oversees the development to meet time and budgetary constraints.
Participates in engineering qualification tests on the product including coordinating with outside suppliers and agencies to ensure compliance.
Develops test protocols and build test apparatuses as needed to reliably evaluate or quantify performance of new or existing products.
Takes initiative to recommend projects, product improvements or cost reductions.
Performs tradeoff between implementation, schedule, cost and resource constraints and recommend alternatives.
Provides technical feedback, input and consultation to other departments in design or implementation activities.
Utilizes CAD systems as related to job and software application programs such as Microsoft Office, ProEngineer/Creo, etc.
Handles multiple complex or multi-activity tasks simultaneously. Has effective time management skills so that high priority tasks are completed as planned.
Prepares product documentation and operating instructions, and reviews technical literature.
Participates in manufacturing pilot runs and field installation evaluations.
Gives product demonstrations.
Conducts value analysis and relays conceptual design information.
Monitors competitive product development.
Evaluates and redesign products for improved process, quality and profitability.
Assists quality control effort with technical advice and up-to-date specifications on matters pertaining to delivered quality.
Provides follow-up service on field complaints.
Performs duties with reduction in product liability in mind.
Maintains responsibility for product design beyond production release.
Supports and participates in cost reduction projects.
Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
Minimum 4 years' experience in product design or mechanical engineering experience. Advanced skills, additional education and exceptional performance may alter this requirement.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, good written and oral communications skills, flexibility and adaptability to changing situations.
Able to proficiently use the tools or materials required to perform typical assigned duties.
Ability to work independently with high attention to detail and solid organizational skills.
Able to apply fundamental engineering theories, mathematics, mechanics, and physical science concepts to the job.
Desired experience with CAD/3D modeling, ProEngineer/Creo preferred.
Experience with BOM structures and engineering change management.
Desire experience in the fields of electronic and mechatronic design.
Desire experience designing for regulatory compliance of UL, NFPA and other global standards.
Desire knowledge of manufacturing processes and limitations to assure conformance of design and fabrication of product.
Experience in plastic modeling and 3D printing a plus.
Ability to interface with global manufacturing facilities.
Communication Skills
A candidate must possess the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, government regulations, and agency standards. They must also possess the ability to write reports, business correspondence, work instructions, effectively present information, and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Reasoning Ability
A candidate must possess the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. They must also be able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have proficiency with Microsoft Office products and CAD/3D modeling, ProEngineer/Creo preferred.
Travel Requirements
Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
