Summary

The Grid Management System Operation Support team is responsible for the development and maintenance of operating policies and procedures, management of a NERC compliance program, and the training and certification of System Controllers, Distribution Controllers and LVD Dispatchers. We support safe and excellent operations through an agile procedure process, extensive training using a performance-based model and ensuring compliance is part of daily business operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

The System Control Trainer is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining System Operator training for Grid Management employees. Requires exceptional ability to interpret and apply the NERC standards as well as understanding and training Grid Management employees on department policies and procedures governing the operation of the HVD and LVD systems. Provide initial and ongoing training and assessment of performance to ensure continuous improvement in skills and capabilities of Grid Management operating employees. This position reports to the System Operations Superintendent of Training and will require travel to the Jackson and/or Grand Rapids control center locations as necessary for in-person classroom training.

Essential Functions

The qualified candidate will:

  • Design, develop, implement and maintain virtual and classroom-based training plans for new and existing Grid Management Operators and LVD Dispatchers in full compliance with all applicable Regulatory standards and Grid Management Policy and Procedures.
  • Assess switching, communication, use of available tools and operational decisions of employees in initial and continuing training activities to support successful development of the Grid Management Real-time workforce.
  • Utilize the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) method for the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation of the System Operator training program within Grid Management.
  • Support overall training activities for the System Operations Training team.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the development and review of Grid Management operating procedures
  • Work with the System Control Management to identify and schedule individual internal and out-sourced training activities as required.
  • Maintain a safe, reliable and healthy training environment by following and educating Grid Management employees on department policies and procedures.
  • Assist in real time storm restoration activities

Requirements/ Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Engineering or related technical field of study, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of combined experience in positions requiring specific knowledge and application of electrical theory, safety, switching and electric system operations
  • Thorough knowledge of electric power system operations, transmission and distribution systems, switching and tagging procedures
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with HVD/LVD SCADA applications
  • Exemplary safety and customer focus
  • Skilled with personal productivity applications (MS Office suite)
  • Self-motivated and organized
  • Strong leadership, problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and able to work with all levels of the organization
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills with demonstrated strengths in diplomacy
  • Flexible and able to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities
  • Ability to work unusual or extended hours including on the weekend to respond to system emergencies or major storm-related restoration efforts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal training experience using the ADDIE process to design, develop and implement training.
  • Experience developing and/or implementing virtual and classroom-based training
  • Knowledge and experience working with the following:
    • Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS)
    • Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)
    • Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Experience with NERC Standard compliance and documentation
  • Current NERC System Operation Certification
  • CE Way/Lean experience and/or training
  • System Controller/Distribution Controller Certification

Hours and Travel

  • This position requires the individual to work 40 hours per week with 70% of time spent in the office at either Grand Rapids/Jackson/remote locations and up to 30% travel to Jackson and Grand Rapids Control Centers.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
